It has never been clearer to me that children with disabilities must be educated in completely inclusive environments. I am reading the book SIMPLE JUSTICE by Richard Kluger. It is a detailed description of the legal battle for desegregation. All of the principles apply to children with disabilities. The most important idea I took from Earl Warren's decision was that the legally mandated segregation an inevitable result: a feeling of inferiority develops in the segregated student. This feeling of inferiority decreases the child's availability for learning. It is my goal--my mission--to bring to California completely inclusive education. I have seen it work. I have been a teacher of students with the most severe disabilities and I have educated general ed. teachers and students on the essential necessity of inclusion. I have supported students in varying classes and seen relationships develop between students receiving special education services, and those not receiving them: Relationships of quality and understanding that would have been precluded without inclusion. How can this go on? Please follow my weblog as I entwine legal principle with practical example to form a noose which will hang until dead the institution of segregated education for individuals with disabilities. |
